HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Alabama Association for the Arts (ALAA) joins hands with Arts Huntsville, the National Education & Empowerment Coalition (NEEC), and the Friends of Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trails to bring the "Arts in Movement: Courageous 8 Traveling Exhibit" to Huntsville. This collaborative effort aims to spotlight the often-unheard narratives of Selma's "Courageous Eight," pivotal figures in the struggle for voting rights during the Civil Rights Movement.
The exhibition, free to the community, showcases different art forms to pay homage to the sacrifices and contributions of these unsung heroes in the pursuit of social justice.
Here is a look at the schedule:
- Sunday, June 16 (4 p.m. - 6 p.m.): An Intimate Mixer with Special Guests at AVIQ. The discussion will go into the significance of preserving history through art and culture.
- Monday, June 17 (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.): The Public Viewing at Huntsville Revisited Museum offers an opportunity for the community to view the exhibit.
- Monday, June 17 (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.): Another Intimate Mixer, this time at Huntsville Revisited Museum, featuring artist Phyllis Parks and representatives from the Courageous 8 families. People will gain insight into the inspiration behind the exhibit.
- Tuesday, June 18 (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.): The Omega Center hosts a Public Exhibit Viewing & Youth Community Conversation, in collaboration with the National Civil Rights Conference. A youth roundtable discussion will also take place, with FOX54's Jasamine Byrd serving as the moderator.
- Wednesday, June 19 (1 p.m. - 7 p.m.): The Juneteenth Celebration & Final Viewing at Oakwood University Church Family Life Center offers a self-guided viewing opportunity coinciding with the federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
