ATHENS, Ala. — We have lost two beloved council members in District 3, both to cancer. When our friend Jimmy Gill died from his battle, the City Council appointed Frank Travis to fulfill the term. Councilman Travis ran unopposed in subsequent elections and continued to serve in that position until April 2022, when he lost his battle to cancer.
On June 27, 2022, the City Council opted to appoint James Lucas to fulfill Frank’s term through 2025. Councilman Lucas previously served on the Athens City Board of Education, and in fact, was the longest standing board member in the State of Alabama. He began serving in 1995.
Councilman Lucas is a graduate of Trinity High School and served in the United States Armed Forces. He has an associate’s degree in business administration, and is a former employee at Radio Corporation of America on Redstone Arsenal and Amoco Chemical.
He actively attends community events and is well known throughout our community. We look forward to working with Councilman Lucas in this new role.
