Athens-Limestone Animal Shelter to transfer pets, will not euthanize

There's been a lot of uncertainty for pet lovers in Athens and Limestone County as October 1 approaches.
Limestone County residents concerned over a proposed animal shelter contract that would keep animals in the shelter for a maximum of 14 days.

ATHENS, Ala. — The future of lost and abandoned pets in Limestone County has been uncertain for the last few months as the contract with one shelter ends and another begins.

One thing is certain, though. Animals remaining at the current Athens-Limestone Shelter at the end on the month will still have the chance to find their forever home. A spokesperson with the shelter said that they are not planning to euthanize these animals. Instead, they will be transferred to the new county shelter.

The current shelter's contract with the county at the end of September. As FOX54 previously reported, the county plans to have its own new shelter open by October 1 after bids for contacts fell through.

We have reached out to Limestone County Animal Control as well as Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly and District 2 County Commisioner Danny Barksdale for an update on the county shelter project. The plan was to convert a former veterinary clinic into the new shelter.
