Athens Main Street receives 3 awards of excellence

The three awards received include the Excellence in Historic Preservation award, Excellence in Fundraising award and the Main Street Hero Community Award.

ATHENS, Ala. — Athens Main Street, a non-profit organization that promotes historic downtown Athens, announced that it has received three awards of excellence by Main Street Alabama.

The three awards received include the Excellence in Historic Preservation award, Excellence in Fundraising award and the Main Street Hero Community Award.

The Excellence in Historic Preservation award was won for the 1871 Limestone County Bell Restoration project, in which a brass bell that was once in the dome of the Limestone County Courthouse.

The Excellence in Fundraising award was won by raising $25,000 over the past two years through the Athens Main Street Stakeholder Program.

The Black family was the recipient of the Main Street Hero Award. The organization said Shane Black has served as Athens Main Street board president for the past three years. Trisha Black was the director of the Spirit of Athens, which became Athens Main Street. Gayle Black serves as a design committee member with Athens Main Street and is on the Athens Limestone Beautification Board.

“The success of downtowns hinges on cooperation and planning between individuals, merchants, developers, employers and our public institutions. In Athens, we have just such a cooperative group working toward a common goal of sustaining a strong, beautiful downtown. It is with great pride that we celebrate these significant successes over the past year,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson.
