Athens Police crack down on illegal alcohol sales to minors, arrests nine people

Starting in early July, Athens police monitored local stores and conducted controlled purchases with a minor to check if they could buy alcohol.

ATHENS, Ala. — Athens Police have arrested nine people at eight different stores for selling alcohol to minors. Starting in early July, Athens Police said that they watched these stores and made controlled purchases using a minor to see if they could buy alcohol. This was done after police received complaints about alcohol being sold to minors at local convenience stores. The source was sent to stores in the city, including those with complaints against them.

"The underage sale of alcohol to minors will not be tolerated due to the devastating effects this could have for our youth and community. These individuals have a responsibility to help ensure that our youth are unable to purchase alcohol," the Athens Police Department said in a statement.

Athens Police confirm that most stores in Athens did not sell alcohol to the minor.
