ATHENS, Ala. — After 41 years in public service, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson will turn in his badge. Johnson announced his retirement at Monday night's city council meeting.

According to the department's Facebook post making the same announcement, Chief Johnson began his career as a dispatcher in August 1982. He became a police officer just two months later, in October 1982, and was made a detective by 1985.

Johnson was promoted to sergeant in 1986, lieutenant in 1998, and captain 11 years later, in 2009. As captain, the department credits Johnson with oversight of the investigative division and served as public information officer.

He became interim chief in January 2012, and the city council offered him the permanent role in February 2012.

Another 11 years later, and Johnson believes it is time for another change.

"Chief Johnson said he loves the job, but he feels it is time to enjoy traveling and working more on his farm," the department said.

Johnson's last day on duty will be August 1.
