Athens Police Department gifts elderly in local nursing homes

Lt. Katrina Flanagan and Athens Police Department is gifting over 450 bags to local nursing homes. This is also made possible with the help of the community.

ATHENS, Ala. — Athens Police Department is giving back today by packing and delivering gift bags for patients in local nursing homes.

Our reporter Jasamine Byrd was there and has more on today's, Gifts for the Elderly where the Athens police department has put together over 450 bags for elderly in local nursing homes.  The Police department has also adopted ten people through DHR.

Gifts for the Elderly is an organization that is specifically for the elderly which was founded by Lieutenant Katrina Flanagan who says, " with the help of everybody in the community that donated some money or items, we were able to put all those together today, and we're delivering them as we speak.

Flanagan says this organization assists, "elderly in need, elderly in nursing homes, elderly that are kind of down on their luck and need help."

Giff for the Elderly also receives donations through the Limestone Area Community Foundation, where Flanagan says, " you donate $15 for a bag or however much you want to donate, and I use that money and I purchase all brand-new items. I usually try to have around 10 to 12 items per bag."

She says, " we get together today and have a good time and then we go room to room and deliver them."

Some of the items in each bag include, " we had baby wipes, we had tissues, we had books, crossword puzzles, coloring pencils, coloring books. we had socks, lotions, blankets, bibles."

Flanagan says, unfortunately some elderly don't have family that come and visit them, and some don't have family left at all " so, during this time of year, it's kind of important for me to show that we still remember them, that they still are loved, and that sometimes with the children involved, it kind of gives them to show them what Christmas is all about."
