ATHENS, Ala. — The Athens Police Department has introduced a new "Exchange Zone" at its facility on Hobbs Street to enhance safety for community transactions. Located in the parking lot, this designated area aims to provide a secure space for those involved in custody exchanges or buying and selling items online, such as on Facebook Marketplace.

The zone includes two marked spots for exchanges and is monitored by two surveillance cameras. Chief Anthony Pressnell explained that the rise in e-commerce transactions prompted the creation of this safe space.

"This is a safer option for those who have custody exchanges of children and for those who have concerns about buying or selling property online and meeting with a stranger to make the exchange," Pressnell said.
