Athens police investigating 2 deaths at a train crossing near McLellan Street

Train crossings are back open after the roads were blocked for more than two hours.

ATHENS, Ala. — The Athens Police Department is investigating two deaths at a train crossing near McLellan Street at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 29.

Athens police identified one individual as 37-year-old Lakerris Petty of Athens. The coroner identified the second victim as Brandy Louise Parker, 31, of Athens.

Police say the two were walking north on the railroad tracks and the train crew did everything they could to warn the two to get off of the tracks.

Police say "the train crew did everything they could to warn the people to get off the tracks before being hit".
