HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — On Monday, authorities provided updates on the death of two inmates over the weekend at Madison County Jail.
Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner said authorities found a 28-year-old Black male unresponsive, on Sunday morning, after he appeared to have ingested drugs before entering the facility.
Turner says he'd been in custody for 28 hours and was charged with two counts of murder due to a grand jury indictment from a case back in 2016.
Authorities also believe a 48-year-old White female died by suicide by using a bedsheet Friday night, just after 9 p.m.
Turner said she was booked on January 27, and was there on charges for domestic violence and second-degree aggravated assault with a knife.
“Due to that charge, she was a probation violation offender, which meant she was going to have to back up and do 36 months. So, whether that lead her to commit suicide; we don’t know,” said Turner.
Turner said the department spoke to the woman at least ten minutes before her death.
"We as an entity for the Madison County Sheriff's Office, it's our job to make sure that we do our job inside that jail. These people are charged with crimes and put in our facility if they've ingested something if they have medical issues; that is something we have to take care of inside the jail," said Turner.
Sheriff Turner said the identities of the inmates have not been released out of respect for the family.
Authorities say both investigations are ongoing. Turner said the suicide case is conclusive and is also waiting on the autopsy report for the male inmate.
