HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Students attending Huntsville City Schools returned to the classrooms Thursday. HCS has over 23,000 students enrolled. With there being many ways to get to school, it's important for drivers to remember to use extra caution when driving near schools.
Grandparent Tracy Sanchez said, "We want them to come home. That's the ultimate goal, is we want them to come home."
School Resource Officer Anthony Rosado said, "In summertime, you don't have the work and the schools going at the same time." "The main thing is to just watch your speed," says Rosado.
It's always good to take extra precautions. "You never know what can happen," said Sanchez, "Sometimes people tend to exceed the speed limit and they're not really aware of their surroundings, especially when they come into the school zones."
Rosado mentioned how it's not a bad thing to slow it down. He added, "Always watch for the kids because especially our younger kids, you know, they'll run straight out there."
Many students take the bus to school. "When you're approaching a bus at the stop signs out, stop," said Rosado. If you find yourself on a divided highway, Rosado suggested, "If you see a bus stopping, just be safe and slow down a little bit."
Overall, if you end up in a school zone, or near a bus, remember what's at stake.
"Being mindful of your surroundings coming into these school zones and letting these kids feel safe coming to and from school," said Sanchez. "Be safe when you're coming to school and be sure to watch the school zones," added Rosado.
