ATHENS, Ala. — The school week began with a showcase of all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) at Athens Renaissance school. Not only was there an exhibition of students' recent projects, but a trailblazing educator was honored for her commitment to her students.
FOX54's camera wasn't the only one in action on campus; there was also the one operated by ARS student Austin Penner and his digital communications team.
"If you look around the room, you can see our filming equipment," Penner showed us. We've been using different cameras; we have been working on a commercial for STEAM Studios."
The educator-specialist at STEAM Studios is Mrs. Taylor Whisenant, who was recently named Trailblazing STEM Educator by the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics and the Challenger Center.
At Monday's showcase, Whisenant was presented with a $5,000 cash award, plus an additional $5,000 that will go towards Athens Renaissance.
"The funds for the school will be used to further enhance the STEAM Studios project that we have going on," Whisenant said. As for her personal award, "I do a lot of travel and volunteering with First Robotics nationwide, so I'm excited to have some funds to put toward that endeavor as well."
Jake Williams, manager of K-12 programs at the AIAA, says STEM is an important series of subjects for future generations to have access and resources for, and that's why they and the Challenger Center created the award.
Whisenant was one of three winners nationwide being recognized for providing STEM resources, particularly those focusing on aerospace, to reach as many students as possible.
"There are educators out there like Taylor who are doing incredible things," said Williams. "This is a way to recognize the amazing work she's doing here with the STEAM Studios and beyond."
