ALEA turns over investigative file on officer-involved shooting that killed Steve Perkins to Morgan County DA's Office

Steve Perkins was shot and killed by Decatur police on Sept. 29. Their investigative file is now with the Morgan County District Attorney's Office.

DECATUR, Ala. — On Sept. 29, Steve Perkins was shot and killed by Decatur police outside of his home. On Dec. 26, ALEA announced that the investigative file has been turned over the the Morgan County District Attorney's Office in this statement:

On Tuesday, December 26, 2023, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) turned over the investigative file regarding the officer-involved shooting involving Mr. Stephen Perkins to the Morgan County District Attorney’s Office.

Morgan County District Attorney released the following statement:

I can confirm that I did meet today [Tuesday Dec. 26, 2023] with the lead investigator for ALEA in the Perkins case and did receive his case report during that meeting. I have already started my review of the file in anticipation of presenting the case to the grand jury. By law, I cannot divulge when the grand jury will meet to consider this case. In the meantime, several assistant district attorneys, my investigator and I will be reviewing and analyzing the facts and evidence contained in this report, as well as all applicable laws.

Perkins family attorney Cannon Lambert, Sr. said in an interview with FOX54:

We're hopeful that that progress  is going to result in charges being brought, prosecutions being had and convictions being obtained....We are actually investigating, trying to determine what happened too. We're doing it in a civil way and there are potential criminal actions that can be brought from whatever ALEA came to find because we don't know what ALEA did in their investigation, we are conducting our own. We will be able to obtain discovery from the parties that are in our lawsuit."

Standing in Power co-founder Aneesah Safiyah sent FOX54 a response saying, "At this point we're hoping that [District Attorney] Scott Anderson does the right thing in that he would get this case before a grand jury, get those responsible for Steve's death indicted and prosecuted."

We are also reaching out to family and community members for comment.
