Broken pipes after freezing weather? Local plumbers offer tips.

Broken pipes mean high bills and a lot on inconvenience. What can you do if the worst happens?

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — After days of sub-freezing temps, some of us may now see frozen faucets.. and burst pipes. This equals high plumbing and utility bills...and a major inconvenience! How can you prevent this from happening the next time the temperature drops?

"There's always prevention. You just may not want to do it, but, it's called you got to cut your water off. It's almost like winterizing your home." Around the OClock Plumbing is very busy after days of sub-freezing weather. Own Arthur Arseneau says another vital tip, especially when temperatures are below freezing, is to keep your water running, "Especially on exterior walls, the more water moving you have, the less chance that your pipes are going to freeze."

Blake Brothers Plumbing department field manager, Garrett Cobern has tips for if you're going out of town for the holidays. "We would advise you to just turn off the water to the whole house and drain the system down." And if for some reason your pipes do burst, " If you have a water line end up bursting, obviously you want to get the water to the whole home shut off as quick as possible."

Cobern and Arseneau both say their companies have been receiving high volume calls recently. Arseneau says you may be on a company's schedule, and even if that plumber still hasn't made it to your house yet, if you book multiple plumbers, "Do not cancel until [one] actually knocks when your door to fix your stuff. Then, you cancel [others]. So it's hard to get a plumber right now. "
