Free cybersecurity courses starts October 1 at Calhoun

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — October is here, and Calhoun Community College is ready to take on Cybersecurity Awareness Month by offering a range of free events and training resources aimed at helping the community defend against cyber threats. This initiative aligns with a national campaign led by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency.

In today's digital world, staying safe online is important for everyone because it protects your personal information and finances.

To equip the community with essential knowledge, Calhoun will host the following free events from October 1 through May 2025:

Free Online Course: Digital Awareness

  • Presenter: Cisco Networking Academy
  • Dates: October 1 – November 9, 2024
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 6 hours (self-paced)
  • Location: Online
  • This beginner-friendly course covers the basics of digital tools, technologies, and managing your digital identity.

Cybersecurity Panel Discussion Seminar

  • Topic: The Cyber Threat Landscape in North Alabama
  • Date: Friday, October 25, 2024
  • Time: 3 – 4 p.m.
  • Location: Huntsville Campus, Math, Science, & CIS Building, Multifunction Room
  • This engaging panel will feature experts discussing the evolving cyber threats facing North Alabama.

Cyber Challenge: Your Pathway to a Cybersecurity Career

  • Presenter: Cisco Networking Academy
  • Availability: October 1, 2024 – May 23, 2025
  • This 8-month, self-paced challenge includes six courses and one exam, leading to an industry-recognized certification as a Junior Cybersecurity Analyst.

For those without computer access, Calhoun CIS Instructor and Department Chair Jeremy Blevins encourages attendance at the panel discussion, which is free and open to the public.
