City of Huntsville DEI partners up to host Mental Health 'Caribbean Qarnival 5K'

The inaugural event will be at Big Spring Park

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Ready to run for a cause? Join members of FOX54 News this Saturday May 18, in Downtown Huntsville.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Psi Kappa Kappa chapter in collaboration with the Youth Friendship Foundation, Huntsville's Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, , and Fleet Feet will present the Caribbean Qarnival 5K. The event aims to promote Mental Health Awareness Month, observed each May.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the Caribbean Qarnival 5K in raising awareness and fostering understanding. More than 20 community health representatives will also be at the event, sharing resources about mental health and wellness.

"Our office is proud to support the Caribbean Qarnival 5K for Mental Health Awareness,” said Kenny Anderson, Director of Huntsville’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. “This event not only encourages mindfulness but also plays a vital role in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. By coming together in solidarity, we demonstrate our commitment to supporting one another's well-being."

Check-in begins at 6 a.m. at 420 Church St. NW, and the 5K race starts at 8 a.m. A 1-mile run starting at 8:15 a.m. offers an inclusive opportunity for community members of all ages and abilities to join in the cause.
