Carson Peters pleads guilty to Capital Murder for 2020 triple murder

Peters will be sentenced to life after pleading guilty today to four counts of Capital Murder and one count of Assault in the First Degree.

DECATUR, Ala. — Carson Ray Peters, age 62 of Danville, pled guilty today to four (4) counts of Capital Murder and one (1) count of Assault in the First Degree. Morgan County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Howell accepted the pleas. District Attorney Scott Anderson, Chief Assistant District Attorney Garrick Vickery, and Assistant District Attorney Paul Matthews prosecuted the case for the State. 

On May 24, 2020, officers with the Decatur Police Department were called to 68 Flint Private Drive in Danville in reference to a shooting. The caller, Mary Kenney, advised she had been shot. When officers arrived, the located Teresa Peters, Tammy Smith, and James Miller deceased with gunshot Morgan County District Attorney’s Office P.O. Box 1727, Decatur, AL 35602  www.morgancountyda.com wounds. Mary Kenney was transported to Huntsville Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She fortunately survived.

It was determined through the investigation that Carson Peters was served with court papers in his divorce from Teresa Peters. Peters went to the residence where his wife was located, where he proceeded to shoot and kill Teresa, her sister Tammy Smith, and Tammy’s boyfriend, James Miller. He then shot Mary Kenney before fleeing the residence.

Police attempted to locate Carson Peters, who later turned himself in to the United States Marshals. Peters was later interviewed by Detective Sean Mukaddam, where he advised that he had been hiding in a cave. He admitted to shooting everyone at the residence.

After meeting with Ms. Kenney and representatives for the victims’ families, the State agreed to a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for each count of capital murder, and a twenty (20) year sentence for the assault charge.

District Attorney Scott Anderson said that he was glad that the family of the victims got the closure they deserved.
