UPDATE: Suspect identified after hours-long standoff in Decatur

The suspect who barricaded himself in the home on Oak Lea Rd. surrendered and is in custody.

DECATUR, Ala. — UPDATE: Michael Pruitt has been identified as the suspect by the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles. He was booked at the Morgan County Jail.

UPDATE: The man who barricaded himself in a home in Decatur near Chestnut Grove Elementary on Wednesday afternoon has surrendered and is in custody. No injuries were reported.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Decatur PD shared an update around 7:30pm.

  • When officers tried to make contact with the person, who is on parole, to serve a warrant, he barricaded himself in. 
  • He is by himself. 
  • They have since been trying to negotiate. 
  • The suspect has a gun. 
  • There was a shot fired inside the house, but no one was hurt. 
  • It's now a "waiting game". 
  • Officials are trying to resolve the situation peacefully through conversation. 
  • The man is not believed to be a danger to himself or anyone else. 
  • Tactical teams are on the ground.

Decatur Police are asking people to avoid the area around Chestnut Grove Elementary School. There is a heavy police presence in the area as authorities continue to handle a scene that involves a barricaded person. According to a spokesperson with DPD, the Alabama Bureau of Pardons & Paroles was trying to serve a warrant when the person barricaded themselves in the home.

Earlier, Decatur Police posted that there is a heavy police presence on Oak Lea Rd. due to a barricaded subject. Drivers are advised to avoid the area at this time. As of 7:00pm, officers continue to negotiate.

Earlier, Chestnut Grove Elementary School in Decatur was briefly places on lockdown by Decatur police due to police presence next to the school. The district posted updates about the situation on their Facebook page. According to a spokesperson for Decatur City Schools, after Deputy Superintendent Satterfield and law enforcement officials arrived and assessed the situation, the lockdown was lifted and the school went into controlled release.

3:43 p.m. UPDATE: Most students have been picked up. Some remain as part of extended day until parents are able to pick up. The school remains in lockdown until the building is clear.

3:33 p.m. UPDATE: All school buses taking CGES students home for the day are on the road. Parents continue to pick up students in car line. We are sending out the last of the students.

3:20 p.m. UPDATE: CGES bus riders are loading up on school buses and should depart in the next 10-15 minutes.
