MADISON, Ala. — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the LDS Church, already has more than eight congregations, or wards, in north Alabama. Plans are already underway to build a new temple, the second in Alabama, but its exact location is yet to be determined.
A land purchase for a meeting house in Madison will be the first new structure in the city. According to documents from the city, the site will cover 6.23 acres between Powell Rd. and Segers Rd.
One possible location is at Browns Ferry Rd. and Gillespie Rd. When asked about the site, Madison County commissioner Steve Haraway said he did not know but would look further into it. However, the building of a church temple is not a fast project.
Church spokesperson John Fellows said, "The temple building is all managed by the House of the Presiding Bishop, but it's all out of Salt Lake [City]." He added that the site for the temple and its building timetable will be announced at a later date.
