The City of Huntsville has finalized an agreement for the construction of the Moxy Hotel just south of Big Spring Park.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Construction is expected to begin in the next 16 months on a 120-room downtown hotel and parking garage.

The City of Huntsville has finalized an agreement with developers to build the "Moxy" property as a new phase of the CityCentre project that is taking shape near Big Spring Park.

The original plans called for a three-phase mixed-use project, but the development team saw an opportunity for a fourth phase, which will include the new hotel and parking facilities.

The build-out will incorporate 8,000 square feet of retail space at the ground level. The parking structure is designed to be six floors with 430 spaces. About one-quarter of those spaces will be dedicated to guests at the Moxy and neighboring AC Marriott hotel.

The development team for the new property is the same group behind the AC Marriott, which opened in 2019.

“This project is crucial for our city center,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “Not only does it address the need for more downtown parking, but it also offers an additional hotel option for visitors eager to experience everything Huntsville has to offer.”

The City will pay up to $11 million of the garage costs while developers will contribute $3 million and will then make lease payments to the city for the spaces that are reserved for hotel use.

A "pre-development" web page for the Moxy project estimates a cost of $40 million for the hotel, though at the time of the posting, plans called for 140 rooms instead of the revised 120 rooms. The site describes the Moxy brand as a "playful, affordable, and stylish hotel brand designed to give guests everything they want and nothing they don't."
