City of Florence takes steps to ask for waiver from monument commission to move Confederate monument

Florence's Confederate monument has been a source of controversy and protest, like many others around the state.

FLORENCE, Ala. — At the Florence City Council meeting this evening, it was announced that the city has taken steps to ask for a waiver from the Committee on Alabama Monument Protection that would allow it to move Florence's Confederate monument

Other Alabama cities and counties have applied for waivers as well and have been rejected. Mayor Randall Woodfin of Birmingham ordered a monument to be removed from his city. The city was fined $25,000.

Mobile also moved a monument and was fined $25,000.
