Decatur 'Community Day' brings focus on unity

The event was made to bring the community together.

DECATUR, Ala. — The Community Citywide Family Day happened in Decatur at Ingalls Harbor on Saturday, July 20th. The event was made to help bring everyone together and support one another.

Event organizer Adrianna Tapscott-Bridges says, "It's to bring out the local businesses and organizations to come together is spread unity and love." Tapscott-Bridges also says, "After so many events have occurred, we was like let's just go ahead and do it so that the community know that we have each other's back."

The event comes after months of unrest in the community. Angela Curry, Executive Director of United Women of Color says, "There's been so many tragedies that have happened in Decatur and over this past year and so we just thought it was very important for us to provide an event that allows us to have a good time." Curry also says, "Community keeps community safe. Community takes care of community that we leave with that empowerment and those seeds that have been shown today."

Attendees were treated by free food, school supplies and more from locally-owned businesses. Tapscott-Bridges says, "We want them to know that we support small businesses and for the organizations so that the community is aware of the information and resources that they have so that they can have the information."

It shows this event also makes everyone aware of the resources at their fingertips. Event organizer Marquell Bridges says, "We just need to know our neighbors. We need to love our neighbors and come together, patronize our local businesses, and just show support. That's what's lacking, love and support, in the world." Curry says "This is a party for the community put on by the community, not by city, but the community of Decatur wanted to come together and show fun and love."
