GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — It's a big day for the City of Guntersville as they celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Guntersville High School.
Guntersville City School Board President, Whitney Mastin, shares, "we've had our fair share of difficulty and certainly a delay in achieving this success. This project has been at least 15 years in the making, if not more…"
15 years in the making, the new Guntersville High School is finally being built.
Avery, who will graduate from GHS in 2029, says, "I feel that it'll be a better environment for us."
Community members say the current high school has out-lived its service and they're ready to bring a modern 21st century high school to the city.
Superintendent Jason Barnett says, "this world-class facility we're building is just going to be an opportunity for our kids to be so successful in college and career and workforce, and we're so excited to be able to provide this for our students in our community."
This $53.5 million project will be constructed on the current GHS campus by Thrash Commercial Contractors and they'll be building more space for immersive programs.
"World-class STEM opportunities, engineering labs and robotics labs, all sorts of things like that, fine arts opportunities, career and technical opportunities, obviously just regular, amazing academic opportunities, media centers with maker spaces," Dr. Barnett said.
The new school is expected to take 28 months to complete and the first graduates will be class of 2026.
Sophie, who will graduate from GHS in 2026 shares, "I'm really happy because I wanted to be one of the first because my brother is a senior and he won't be able to...But he really loved this school."
