Coronavirus cases in Morgan County continue to rise

The number of cases keep rising daily in Morgan county and city leaders are worried they'll see another spike in the upcoming weeks.

"As of today, our cases are 1,102 that is a 20% increase over the last week," said Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling.

The number of cases keep rising daily in Morgan County and city leaders are worried they'll see another spike in the upcoming weeks.

"I'm fearful that our Independence Day gatherings will cause another spike, it probably will," said Decatur Morgan Hospital Chief Nursing Officer, Anita Walden. "But hopefully more and more people were taking things more seriously and they were careful to keep those gatherings to a minimum."

Walden said there's been an 18% increase of hospitalizations over the past eight days across the state.

"Hospitalizations are very concerning. Today we have 23 positive inpatients and we have 19 that are under investigation. That means they've been tested and we are awaiting their results. So that's a lot of patients to take care of. Those people under investigation are treated the same as if they were positive."

Walden said she knows how hard social distancing can be but it's a vital step to try and flatten the curve.

"What can you do to help? Social distance from everyone, even your family. It's hard. My mom is a hugger. It's so hard for her to not give everyone she sees a hug even us, but she's learning."

Local leaders said it's time for everyone to take personal responsibility and do what's best for the community."

"We've been urging people to wear masks since day one," said Walden. "I don't think about this as infringing upon my rights. When I don't wear a mask I'm infringing upon your rights. I'm getting you sick and that's not okay."
