Coronavirus hotspots have doctors urging caution

Alabama still has COVID-19 hotspots, and doctors are urging the public to do their part to keep people safe.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — There are a handful of COVID-19 hot spots in Alabama, and two of those are Franklin County and Marshall County.

Doctors at UAB in Birmingham have been treating patients from other areas because some smaller hospitals are not able to handle the influx of patients they are seeing.

Dr. Dionne Odom at UAB says everyone needs to do their part to buy more time, as there is still not a solid treatment or vaccine for the virus. She says, the virus is not gone and the fight is not over.

"When you see these hot spots start to show up, that is an indication to us that we may need to change some of our behaviors again. You don't want to continue going out when you see the numbers start to increase.  We do not have an infinite amount of ICU beds, ICU nurses, ICU doctors to take care of very sick patients."

While the number of new cases across the state appears to be leveling off, this could change rapidly as more businesses and facilities open and summer holidays and activities get underway.
