HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A multipurpose recreation center has been approved for John Hunt Park on the south side of Huntsville.

The City Council on Thursday gave the go-ahead to build the $18.5 million facility, which will include 25 lighted pickleball courts, indoor basketball/volleyball courts, and fitness and activity rooms.

The Fite Building Company has been selected for the project, with construction expected to begin this fall. The facility is expected to take 14 months to complete.

John Hunt Park is located just north of Joe Davis Stadium, on 9th Avenue SW, and is the city's largest park. It features numerous playing fields, a disc golf course, running trail, mountain bike trail, skate park, and ice sports center.

The single-story rec center will be located at the bend of Don Michner Dr. SW. That area will receive a streetscape update to coincide with construction of the recreational facility.

The center will feature four gymnasiums housing the indoor courts, which can be used for either basketball or volleyball. Restroom and concession facilities are also included in the design.

The pickleball courts will sit beneath a pre-engineered metal building cover.

A new parking area will accommodate about 300 vehicles.
