MADISON, Alabama — On Sunday afternoon, Dana Fletcher's family was joined by dozens of protesters demanding answers about his death by Madison police. They lined the streets of US 72 and Wall Triana Highway, near the Planet Fitness where he was killed.
The family wants the police department release body camera footage of Fletcher's death.
"Why were they even there in the first place? Those events play in my mind every single day. And every day that goes by without justice, the pain and suffering gets worse," says his wife, Cherelle Fletcher.
On October 27th, 2019, Fletcher was shot and killed in front of his wife and eight-year-old daughter in the parking lot, just outside of the Planet Fitness.
Nearly a month later, the Madison County District Attorney, and Incident Review Board ruled the shooting justified.
Authorities say he was armed, but his wife Cherelle says he wasn't. Fletcher's sister, Radiah Fletcher, says the family made a request for information, such as recordings, but say they were met with dead silence.
"We cannot even get a listen at a 9-1-1 or any call that they received," says Radiah.
Dana's mother believes that she will have an answer to her son's death.
"We will have justice. And I am not here fighting for equality. I'm already above them," says Deborah Fletcher.
Mrs. Fletcher is tapping on elected leaders and law enforcement in Alabama with a call to action. "Join us in supporting complete transparency! Join us in making body cam footage public record! Join us and support the Dana Fletcher Bill, making body cam footage public record!"
Fletcher's family holds these protest every Sunday in Madison.
