ATHENS, Ala. — The Athens Arts League is bringing the vibrant celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) to Downtown Athens, with festivities running from October 31 through Saturday, Nov. 2, at High Cotton Arts.

This annual holiday honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away, transforming mourning into a celebration filled with colorful traditions.

Families participate by creating displays called ofrendas, featuring photos of the deceased alongside their favorite foods, drinks, and marigold flowers. The public is invited to contribute by placing photos of their own loved ones on the ofrenda, which will be open for viewing on Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday during the same hours.

The main celebration on Saturday will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring live music by Grupo Sol and the Athens High School Choir. Guests can also enjoy bilingual storytelling sessions about the Day of the Dead, with shows at 3:45, 4:15, 4:45, and 5:15 p.m.
