Decatur church ravaged by New Year's Day fire

Sixth Avenue Community Church leaders ask for prayers as the congregation works to recover from the devastating blaze.

DECATUR, Ala. — 2024 begins with a devastating blow to the congregation of the Sixth Avenue Community Church in Decatur. Pastor Sean DeMars broke the news on social media Monday morning, accompanied by photos showing the fire's destruction to the chapel building.

DeMars said the fire happened early New Year's Day; he was informed of the blaze around 4:30 a.m.

"Unfortunately, the fire was not small," he wrote. "The entire meeting hall was consumed, and the rest of the building incurred significant smoke and water damage."

Photos posted to the church's Facebook page included exterior shots of the building, with thick black smoke marks out of many windows. Pictures of the sanctuary showed collapsed ceiling tiles showering pews with charred debris, with emergency lights shining through distant windows like those of stained glass.

Another picture shows what appears to be either a bible or a hymnal, its leather-bound cover shriveled and scorched by the flames.

An investigator told Pastor DeMars that the cause of the fire was a wall heater in the foyer at the front of the building.

DeMars said that as of right now, "there is nothing more to be done other than pray and be the church to one another." Elders are available to talk for whoever needs solace. DeMars also said it was important for his flock to "rejoice that no one was hurt."

In the days to come, the pastor said decisions will be made on how to move forward in terms of recovery and rebuilding. There will also be discussions on where to hold next Sunday's service.
