DECATUR, Alabama — Sending your student to college, while an investment, can put a damper on your bank account. That's why Decatur City Schools wants students and parents to know there are multiple scholarship opportunities available, and not just for scholar students.
"A lot of families get caught up in the theory: if my child didn't play a sport, there aren't scholarships out there for my student or, my kid is not going to be the valedictorian - there's not an opportunity out there for him or her. That's not true," said Scholarship Enthusiast with Decatur City Schools, Mary Ann Hotaling.
Now, of course, you must apply for these scholarships and oftentimes are asked to write an essay but that work being put in now will benefit both students and parents, as well as their wallets in the future.
"There are scholarships out there for every kind of student. The catch is, you have to be willing to put in the work to apply. If there's an essay that needs to be written, to take the time to write a quality essay to submit to the scholarship committee," said Hotaling.
