Decatur Police: December 3 police standoff suspect died from self-inflicted gunshot wound

Police say they later discovered a fire had been set in the house and the suspect's body was discovered inside.

DECATUR, Ala. — UPDATE: The Decatur Police Department say the suspect in a multiple-hour police standoff on December 3 died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A suspect is dead after a standoff with Decatur police regarding a domestic dispute call on Friday.

Police say officers responded to the call at around 8:15 a.m. in the 3700 block of Neches Court Southwest. The victim told police their ex-husband broke into the home and held them against their will until they managed to escape.

The Decatur Police Department Crisis Negotiation Unit and Special Operations Teams were called to the scene and attempted to open a line of communication with the suspect. Police say after hours of negotiations, the suspect refused to comply.

Police say they later discovered a fire had been set in the house and the suspect's body was discovered inside.

The case is still under investigation. This is all the information that is currently available.
