DECATUR, Ala. — The city of Decatur has been the site of ongoing demonstrations and controversy since the September 29, 2023 shooting death of Steve Perkins by former Decatur police officer Mac Marquette. Community members have been consistently calling for the resignation of Decatur mayor Tab Bowling and Police Chief Todd Pinion.
According to Councilman Hunter Pepper, Bowling called for the meeting.
On August 29, Mayor Bowling release the following statement:
Earlier this week, I met with a number of individuals who have been involved in organizing protests in our city as part of our ongoing effort to help our city heal. As Mayor, I believe that in a position of leadership, one must listen to all citizens, even those they may have disagreements with.
I readily admit that I could have done better at times in this role, but I promise, I have always tried to hold the city’s best interests at the forefront.
Together, we continue to try and heal, and I believe that we have a bright future. The ongoing conversations will continue to be about how we improve our city for all citizens.
I have prayed and sought advice from many. Please continue to pray for our city.
FOX54 reached out to the mayor's office for the names of the people he met with and the context of the meeting and he declined to provide any further comment. We are continuing to try to reach out to try to find out more about the meeting.
Earlier in 2024, Mayor Bowling announced that he would no longer stay for public comment during City Council meetings unless the comments are related to specific items on the agenda.
