Decatur man identified as drowning victim at Hard Dock Marina

A group told Decatur Police their friend had jumped from the boat early Sunday morning and didn't resurface.

DECATUR, Ala. — UPDATE: Limestone County Coroner Mike West has identified the man who drowned at the Hard Dock Marina on Sunday as 24-year-old Emmanuel Merriweather from Decatur.

A man jumped from a boat early Sunday morning and was discovered dead a short time later.

Decatur Police said they were called to the Hard Dock Marina at 3755 Hwy. 31 N just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of a missing person.

A group told officers their friend had jumped off a boat and failed to resurface.

Just a short while later, at approximately 7 a.m., a man's body was recovered from the Tennessee River. Limestone County Coroner Mike West was called to the scene and is conducting an investigation into the cause of the man's death.

The victim's name has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.

Police said a local fisherman assisted Morgan County Rescue Squad and Decatur Fire & Rescue in the search.

It was the first of two separate and unrelated death investigations police had to deal with Sunday; the second happened around 1:30 p.m. inside a home in the 1000 block of East Moulton St.

Police say this is believed to be an isolated incident. No further details were immediately available.
