HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The City of Huntsville has signed off on a contract for the demolition of the building that was once home to government operations.

The former City Hall will be taken down piece-by-piece -- not through an implosion -- at a cost of $1.24 million.

The contract was awarded to Britt Demolition and Recycling, Inc., based in Hanceville.

The first 2-to-3 months of the project will focus on environmental concerns, addressing issues that could have a negative impact on the area when the building comes down. The contract itself runs for 240 days, allowing for work to continue through the first half of 2025.

After 240 days, the contractor would be charged $100 per day until the work is completed.

The former City Hall opened in 1965 and was replaced this year by a new structure built across the street from the old one. The new City Hall is a 7-story structure with 170,000 square feet of space for city leaders and about 370 workers.

Once the former City Hall is cleared from the site, Big Spring Park will expand to encompass the property.

The City says demolition work will not affect the annual Tinsel Trail or other downtown holiday activities.
