HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Downtown Huntsville, Inc. is calling on local leaders to remove and locate the Confederate memorial from downtown's Courthouse Square as a step towards healing relationships in the community.
In a letter published on their Facebook page, DHI said, "The tragic killing of George Floyd has magnified the deep pain experienced by African Americans and other members of our community. We are heartbroken by this pain and believe a true path toward healing requires more than words of reconciliation or statements of empathy and support.
They are asking that the memorial be removed and relocated to a historically contextual location that would allow people to "learn from the great pain this memorial represents" while removing it from the courthouse grounds.
