NIAID Director Dr. Anthony S. Fauci joined U.S. Senator Doug Jones during a virtual press conference on Tuesday.
During the press conference, Fauci said he is in support of students going back to school in August, because if not, it can have ripple effects on families. He explained it depends where you live on what kinds of precautions schools should take.
Senator Jones and Fauci also stressed the importance of wearing face masks when in public. He says wearing any kind of face covering is better than none. Fauci also showed his support for mandating wearing face masks.
"If you say it (wearing a mask) doesn't matter, whether you put it on or take it off, you're giving a wrong mixed signal. The signal should be wear a mask, period," said Fauci.
Fauci explained that 20% to 40% of infected people do not show symptoms. People can spread the virus by simply talking and be completely unaware. He says that's why wearing face masks is so important.
Dr. Fauci goes on to say the slope of Alabama's curve is concerning, but there is still an opportunity to curb the spread before it gets worse.
