$600 million in proposed changes at Huntsville City Schools: What to know

The district will hold several community meetings to discuss plans and engage parents in feedback.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — North Alabama's largest school district is set to undergo major renovation and expansion projects. Huntsville City Schools unveiled its 10-year proposed capital plan at a recent board meeting.

"This plan is an investment in the success of our students, teachers, and staff members by outlining our long-term vision for school campuses across the city," the district says in its information page about the project. "The key goals of the proposed capital plan include supporting teaching and learning, reimagining Magnet programs, and optimizing facilities."

The plan is projected to cost $600 million and includes major changes, such as a new Huntsville Middle School building. Mountain Gap and Chapman Elementary Schools are marked for closure in the plan, with students to be transitioned to other campuses, and there are multiple renovations to gymnasiums, cafeterias, classrooms, and activity fields.

A new Central Office for the district is included in the plan, as well as a renovation to Milton Frank Stadium.

"We think this plan will move our district forward," said HCS Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton. "We want to be a top district, not only in our state but in the nation. We think there's a part of that plan to move us forward.

"Feeder plans" have been developed for certain areas, explaining the changes for each school impacted.

Parents and guardians are invited to attend several community meetings scheduled throughout the month of April to learn more about the capital plan and provide feedback. All meetings are from 5:30pm-7:00pm.
