Local church holds weekly drive-thru food giveaway: filling need for families as kids head back to school

Some families struggle to have everything they need even during a normal year. The pandemic has caused financial despair. One church is stepping in to help.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Even during a normal school year, some families struggle to have everything they need and really depend on free and reduced lunches. Things are magnified during the pandemic.

Most school districts are still offering lunch pick-ups. But, one local church is also helping to fill the need.

First Baptist Church of Meridianville has been holding dive-thru food giveaways, handing out mostly non-perishable food items, since March to help families in need.

With the help of their church congregation, the church has raised about 17,000 dollars to keep this program running. Organizers say they have plans to continue it long after the pandemic ends.

We spoke with David Hutto, the Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church of  Meridianville. He says he sees the need during this back to school season. Hutto says, “There are plenty of folks that need help on a consistent basis. We’re also involved with ‘Lunches of Love’ that hands out weekend lunches to children who don’t get them except for at school.”

The Food Pickup is every Monday from 10 am to noon at the First Baptist Church of Meridianville. The church posts updates about the food giveaways on their Facebook page
