ATHENS, Ala. — Athens State University will be hosting a Flag Day celebration. The ceremony will be on Friday, June 14, at noon in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom. The event celebrates the United States flag and pays tribute to past and present armed forces members. This year's guest speaker is J.D. Manders.

The ceremony will feature the presentation of colors by the Limestone County Honor Guard, with Jerry Crabtree leading the Pledge of Allegiance and honoring veterans. People can enjoy musical performances by the Athens State Community Band and Choir. The event is free and open to the public, followed by a complimentary lunch.

J.D. Manders, a children's author and motivational speaker, will share his experiences as a writer and soldier. Manders wrote books like "The Fairy Child" and "The Mermaid's Quest" while deployed with the Army National Guard. Manders has since spoken about military service and the importance of family readiness.

Every year, Flag Day celebrates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress decided the composition of the nation's flag.
