SHEFFIELD, Ala. — A 16-year-old girl was killed early Wednesday morning in Sheffield. The shooting happened around 1 a.m. in the 1000 block of S. Nashville Avenue.
According to Sheffield Police, they found the girl lying in the grass with a gunshot wound in her back, between her shoulder blades. She was taken to Helen Keller Hospital but passed away shortly after.
Florence City Schools has confirmed that the victim was a student at Florence High School. In a statement released Thursday, Florence City Schools said:
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss in our district. Florence City Schools will offer grief counseling services at Burrell-Slater from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 26. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this loss."
The Sheffield Police Department is investigating and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
