Iron City man charged in Florence Walmart parking lot assault confined to house arrest

Larry Palmer is accused of running down another man in the store's parking lot, then advancing on him armed with a gun.

FLORENCE, Ala. — The Tennessee man accused of trying to run down a man outside a Florence Walmart store as part of an ongoing dispute appeared before a judge Friday morning. 73-year-old Larry Franklin Palmer is charged with attempted murder against the victim, a 68-year-old Rogersville man.

Palmer, as part of a release order, posted $100,000 bond and was ordered to remain under house arrest until further notice. He will wear an ankle monitor and will only be allowed essential travel outside the home, e.g., medical visits. Palmer must also surrender all firearms and must have no contact with the victim, his family, or his co-workers.

Palmer was arrested the night of Jan. 31, after witnesses say he attempted to run the victim down in his pickup truck after circling the parking lot for some time. Witnesses then say Palmer exited his truck armed with a revolver. The victim then ran into the Walmart for help.

The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Police arrested Palmer about a half-hour after the incident at a nearby hospital. Medical staff noticed a gun among Palmer's belongings and notified police; Palmer disclosed there was an ongoing legal dispute between the victim and himself. Palmer is also charged with witness tampering as a result of this incident.

A preliminary hearing for Palmer is scheduled for March 4.
