FORT PAYNE, Ala. — A DeKalb County teacher was jailed Monday after law enforcement said she was found on campus with alcohol.
According to the Fort Payne Police Department, 49-year-old Melissa Ann Harris was arrested and charged with public intoxication, possession of alcohol on school grounds, and possession of a controlled substance.
The Fort Payne City Schools website says Harris is a teacher at Fort Payne Middle School. Police say school officials contacted them and reported suspicion of an intoxicated teacher.
School resource officers responded to the campus and spoke with Harris, and reported finding the alcohol, along with medication for which Harris did not have a valid prescription.
Harris was taken to the DeKalb County Detention Center and held on $4,500 bond.
The police department narrative did not specify whether Harris had any contact with students prior to her arrest. We have reached out to Fort Payne City Schools administration for further comment.
Police say a law enforcement and school district investigation is ongoing.
