Garrett Crumby's name added to HPD Fallen Officers Memorial

Officer Crumby was killed in a shooting at a Huntsville apartment complex in March.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The name of Garrett Crumby was officially added to a somber list of names marking Huntsville's fallen police officers at a ceremony held Monday.

A brick with Crumby's name and dates of birth and death was laid at the Huntsville Fallen Officers Memorial at the Department of Public Safety Center. Mayor Tommy Battle and representatives from the Huntsville Police Department and the Huntsville Police Citizens Foundation spoke at the ceremony.

Crumby was shot and killed the evening of March 28 while responding to a shots fired call at an apartment complex on Governors West Drive. A female civilian and fellow responding officer Albert Morin were also shot in the course of the incident.

The fate of the female victim was never made public. After spending time in the intensive care unit, Morin was released from Huntsville Hospital on April 14.

Crumby joined the Huntsville police force in August 2020 after starting his law enforcement career with the Tuscaloosa Police Department. There, he spent nearly seven years as a patrol and field training officer.

He was known within the Huntsville Police Department as a friendly man with a love for the outdoors and a sweet tooth. They said he consistently had a positive attitude and a willingness to learn more about the job.

At his April 3 funeral services, family members remembered Crumby's dedication to public safety and protecting those who couldn't help themselves. "He was Batman, and he wouldn't have it any other way - he really did have plans to save us all," they said.
