HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Food Bank of North Alabama is calling on the community to help fight hunger this Giving Tuesday, a global event encouraging people to give back to local organizations. This year, Giving Tuesday falls on December 3.
“The Food Bank of North Alabama is fortunate to be based in such a giving community,” said Shirley Schofield, CEO of the Food Bank. “This year’s Giving Tuesday is especially important to the Food Bank because we’re seeing more and more people requiring assistance with accessing food for their families.”
Schofield said that Giving Tuesday encourages many people in the community to donate their time and money to causes they care about. She also pointed out that it’s especially important this year because the holidays are a crucial time for those who are struggling to get enough food.
Since October 2023, the Food Bank says they have seen a 24% increase in the need for food assistance. More than 184,000 people in the Food Bank’s 11-county service area are facing food insecurity, including over 50,000 people in Madison County alone.
The Food Bank serves the counties of Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and Jackson.
In the 2024 fiscal year, the Food Bank distributed 15.1 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 12.6 million meals. Through its network of 230 organizations, including food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and women, the Food Bank continues to provide essential support to those in need. Major partners include Manna House, Downtown Rescue Mission, and the Salvation Army.
“When people choose the Food Bank to give to during Giving Tuesday, it will help to provide needed food for our programs that will stay right here in North Alabama and honor our 40 years of service to this community,” Schofield said. “We pride ourselves in our efficiency. Every dollar donated helps provide 7 meals to people who need them this holiday season.”
Giving Tuesday has become a global movement, with millions of people around the world participating in acts of generosity. According to Giving Tuesday Data Commons, the U.S. alone saw $3.1 billion in donations in 2023, with 34 million adults taking part.
Giving Tuesday reminds everyone that every act of generosity counts, whether it’s time, money, or other resources. The Food Bank of North Alabama is encouraging everyone to contribute on December 3 and help make a difference for those facing hunger in the region.
