Gov. Ivey: 'Rebuild Alabama has made a great difference'

Governor Kay Ivey gives an update on 'Rebuild Alabama' and its impact on the state's infrastructure.

DECATUR, Ala. — The Decatur Rotary Club and Decatur Day Break Club on Monday welcomed Governor Kay Ivey as guest speaker.

The governor spoke about updates on the 'Rebuild Alabama' project and its impacts on the state's infrastructure.

She said since October 1, 2019, more than $400 million in revenue has been generated and has gone into road and bridge projects, as well as the state's port.

"Rebuild Alabama is an initiative that is bipartisan. We worked real hard with all members of the legislature and they passed it with 80% of the vote, and that Rebuild Alabama has made a great difference. We need to keep it up, we need to keep on seeing 'Rebuild Alabama' blue signs going up over time," said Ivey.

The funding comes from a grant program that was created under the Rebuild Alabama Act, which raised taxes on gas in order to get the extra money.

Ivey said $14 million of those funds were used for an additional lane for I-565, and to revamp the South Memorial Parkway corridor.

ALDOT was seeking public commentary on a proposal to revamp the South Memorial Parkway corridor, which ended last month.

This proposal includes Veterans Drive Southeast to the south of Weatherly Road in the city of Huntsville and ALDOT wants you to have an opportunity to offer public input.

“[The proposal] includes multiple changes that would improve traffic flow and safety for motorists, " said ALDOT Public Information Officer, Seth Burkett.

“Thanks to Rebuild Alabama, we're finally beginning to really chip away at that. But, you know, we have needs, and those needs are certainly growing for an area like Huntsville that continues to grow,” said Burkett.
