MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. — An investigation has determined that a Decatur City Schools student passed a firearm to another student who was found with the weapon.

Officials believe the 12-year-old who provided the gun took it from a home in Decatur and passed it to the second student. They stated the weapon was not brought on campus.

Decatur City Schools said it had previously removed the 12-year-old from "the regular school environment" because administrators were aware of threatening behaviors involving the child. They are in contact with police and with the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

Decatur City Schools said it would not comment further on the matter. FOX54 contacted the Morgan County School District which said the incident did not involve any of its campuses or students.

Statement from Decatur City Schools

This morning, Decatur City Schools was notified of a report involving a firearm in the possession of a student attending a school in Morgan County. Our administrative team discovered the student obtained the firearm from a Decatur City Schools student.

Decatur City Schools immediately launched an investigation through our school resource officers. Our investigation revealed that the firearm was taken from a home in Decatur and then passed on to the Morgan County student. No evidence or reports suggest that the gun was ever on any Decatur City Schools campus.

We can confirm that the student had already been removed from the regular school environment due to threatening behaviors at school and at home. We have taken the necessary steps to notify both the police and the Alabama Department of Human Resources, as we have concerns about the level of supervision this 12- year-old is receiving and his ability to access firearms.

We are releasing this information to ensure accurate details are shared with the public and to prevent the spread of misinformation. We want to emphasize that no firearm was brought onto any Decatur City Schools campus. And that the firearm in question was recovered from a student who does not attend Decatur City Schools.
