Man arrested after search in Gurley for stolen car and possible kidnapping

The call for help came from a Circle K gas station and convenience store in Owens Cross Roads

GURLEY, Ala. — UPDATE: The Madison County Sheriff's Department says a man was caught after officers flooded an area near Cherry Tree Road in Gurley Tuesday night.

Earlier in the evening, the Huntsville Police Department issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for a possible kidnapping.

Around 9:45 p.m., officers responded to a possible theft in progress at the 6600 block along U.S. 431. There, they located an adult female who stated her car was stolen, and she reported to the responding officers that her child was inside the car.

In coordination with the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Huntsville Police Department, officers with the Gurley Police Department soon found the vehicle on the side of Cherry Tree Road near Berkley Road. They saw a man fleeing the vehicle on foot. When they searched the vehicle, they located the child inside the car and unharmed.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office found the man who fled after a search in the woods. He was arrested, and the Madison County Sheriff's Office charged him with the possession of drug paraphernalia.

The man was transported to Huntsville Police Department, and the department is still investigating a criminal case at this time.

Previous Coverage: Law enforcement officers swarmed an area in Gurley near Cherry Tree Road Tuesday night searching for a person connected to a crashed vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle was stolen and a child was reported to be inside.

People on the scene say law enforcement sent up a drone and had an active search going in a wooded area near the wreck. K-9 teams were on the scene as well.

Shortly after 9 p.m., units were scrambled in large numbers to a call regarding a car that was stolen from a Circle K gas station and convenience store in Owens Cross Roads. The caller said a child was in that vehicle.

A description of the car was provided and FOX54 can confirm that numerous law enforcement vehicles converged on a portion of Cherry Tree Road south of Old US 431, where a wrecked car was located.
