The investigation is still ongoing.
UPDATE (4:25 P.M. 11/10): The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has identified the suspect and victim in a shooting that happened Saturday night.
Officials say 21-year-old Jeremiah Matkins fired a gun during a verbal altercation at the Twin Peaks restaurant and bar in the Mid-City District.
23-year-old Ray'shun Markelle Bates of Decatur was fatally wounded, ALEA said. Two other people were injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment. Original reports indicated a total of four people were injured.
Matkins was arrested by Huntsville Police and charged with murder. He was taken to the Madison County Jail, where records show he is being held without bond as of Sunday evening.
ALEA also confirmed that an off-duty Huntsville officer was working as security detail at the restaurant. The officer, who has not been identified, fired his weapon during the incident, but it was determined no one was struck by his gunfire.
The investigation is ongoing, and findings will be turned over to the Madison County District Attorney's Office.
Our original reporting continues below:
One person has died following a shooting Saturday night at the Twin Peaks restaurant and bar in the MidCity district.
The Madison County coroner early Sunday said the unidentified 23-year-old man died from gunshot wounds. Dr. Tyler Berryhill said an autopsy will follow.
FOX54 reported previously that four people were hurt in the incident, which involved an off-duty HPD officer who was working a side job at the location.
"There was an altercation that took place between two groups of people at Twin Peaks," Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said at a media briefing around 11:30 p.m.
Giles' address to the media was brief and he did not take questions.
Huntsville police did confirm that an off-duty officer was involved in the incident, which will be investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. It is believed the officer was on staff at the restaurant.
An officer on the scene told FOX54:"We have part-time contract work and can do security for certain businesses."
A call went out about the shooting at or near the restaurant around 9:45 p.m., HEMSI said.
Webster said all four of the injured were taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment. At least one victim was critically wounded, he said.
Witness video shows customers inside Twin Peaks watching through windows as police conduct their investigation.
ALEA will take over the investigation as an officer was involved in the shooting, Giles said. That agency will provide further updates in that investigation when available.
