Historic Huntsville High School to become Annie Merts condos

A new condominium development is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The old Huntsville High School building is set to undergo a major transformation. By early 2025, it will be converted into a new condominium development named the Annie Merts Condos.

Ben Nemec with Keller Williams Realty revealed that the project aims to turn the historic site into one of Huntsville's premier condominium developments. "Ten total condo units available varying from 1 to 3 bedrooms. And of those ten, three have sold pre sold...We still have seven available. And those do as well range 1 to 3 bedrooms," Nemec said.

The building has a rich history. A former student recalls it as Huntsville High School, and more recently, it served as an administrative building known as the Annie Merts Center.

Andy Kelly, a former student of the old Huntsville High School and a current homeowner in the Twickenham neighborhood, spoke about the renovation. “I went to school here, all my three sisters and my brother went to school there," Kelly said "We're glad it's going to be a home to people and it's going to be a contributing asset to the neighborhood."

Nemec noted that condominiums have been scarce in Huntsville. He emphasized that the building’s historic charm will be preserved. “You don’t have to worry about the maintenance issues that come with historic homes. We’ll maintain the building’s historical look while providing modern amenities,” Nemec added.

Even though the building is still under renovation, Nemec and his team are available to show potential buyers the current state of the space and provide a preview of what the finished condos will look like.
