Home invasion, shots fired near campus prompt lockdown at Snead State, hospital

Boaz police confirm a report of shots fired prompted a lockdown at Snead State Community College on Thursday night.

BOAZ, Ala. — A residential disturbance led to shots being fired, which prompted lockdown conditions at nearby Snead State Community College as well as Marshall Medical Center South Thursday night.

Alerts confirming the lockdown went out to students and medical center personnel via email and/or text message shortly before 9 p.m.  The message received by Snead State students and faculty read "EMERGENCY! This is a LOCKDOWN for the Snead State Community College main campus in Boat. This is a LOCKDOWN for a report of shots fired on campus. Remain indoors, away from lines of sight. LOCKDOWN."

The text alert sent to those connected with the hospital read "Marshall Medical Center SOUTH is currently under lockdown procedures. If you are on campus please remain in your assigned area unless otherwise directed. If you are reporting to work please enter through employee entrances only. Everyone should be aware of your surroundings and do not enter if a visual threat is present."

While the Snead State alert mentioned "a report of shots fired on campus," a police representative FOX54 spoke with over the phone confirmed the incident actually centers at a home nearby but off the college campus.

Just before 10 p.m. Marshall County Sheriff's Office officials confirmed they are assisting Boaz police with the home invasion incident that prompted the lockdown. They said the shooting "occurred between a homeowner and a suspicious person on their property.

They said it appeared the suspect fled the area and a law enforcement presence continued in the area as of 10 p.m.

The lockdown at Snead State was dropped shortly before 10:30 p.m. There were no injuries reported, according to a statement from Snead State President Dr. Joe Whitmore.
